Blog 8: Fresh as a Daisy
This week I painted daisies! This painting was enjoyable for me because I used it as a way to give myself a break from studying anatomy. I would study for an hour and then paint for fifteen minutes at a time. This allowed each layer of paint to dry so it worked out nicely.
Enjoyment (low boredom) F is where my new occupation falls among the options presented. Painting for me has a high meaning and is congruent with my personal goals for a couple of reasons. One being that it is an occupation that already exists within my family. In addition, I am painting for this blog assignment so that I am able to accomplish my own personal goals and values related to being a future occupational therapist.
Learning more about boredom has helped me to understand that it is not always a bad thing to experience. The article talked about a healthy amount of boredom being a helpful tool to evoke creativity. The article also talked about the dangers of boredom in excess. People who are overly bored might experience aggression or mental health issues. Like other emotions, balance is key. In previous phases of my life, I most definitely avoided situations that made me bored. Now that I have expanded my knowledge on this topic, I might feel more inclined to say yes to things that do not spark my immediate interest. This relates to my new occupation because painting does not always sound like an exciting thing to do. In all honesty, if I did not have a grade motivating me to paint I probably would not be doing it weekly. I feel more inspired to paint moving forward. Even if painting sounds boring, I know that my creativity will have a chance to grow once I begin. I know this is beneficial to my overall well-being.

Hi Krista! Your painting this week is so cute! Some weeks I can really relate to only participating in our new occupation because we receive a grade for it. My motivation fluctuates a lot on a week to week basis. How might you adjust your occupation in the future to prevent or embrace boredom?
ReplyDeleteHey Addie! This is a great question. One way I might prevent boredom with this occupation is finding ways to make it more exciting. I've been wanting to sign up for a paint and sip class for awhile now. I feel like participating in something like this would allow me to paint while socializing with others. It would also be a great way to learn some new painting skills. I feel that my skills are very limited as of right now. I could use painting as a way to embrace boredom by allowing the boredom to evoke creativity. I never know what to paint, but It seems like when I have a moment of boredom, I consider options and make decisions.
